I don't know much about RC flight so excuse my ignorance ...

At the moment I'm just practising with a simulator (Aerofly) but I was wondering which mode it was "normal" to set a transmitter to ? Currently my USB "transmitter" is set to "mode 4"(?) where I have elevator and rudder on the right stick, and throttle and a aileron on the left. I'm concerned about practising with my simulator only to find, should I ever use a  "buddy box" system, that my stick set-up may be nonstandard.   Huh?

Welcome to the forums!

In a word... mode 2 or mode 1 are what is generally used in the UK for fixed wing... Now, with modern transmitters you can get away with buddying up with someone who flies a different mode (I've successfully done this with Spektrum kit), but as you can only readily obtain mode 1 and mode 2 trannies in the UK, then that is what you need to look at adjusting your brain to, before it's too late!

There are many and boring arguments for which mode is better, but I think it really just boils down to whatever your brain prefers.

I fly mode 2, which is throttle/rudder left, and aileron/elevator right... I prefer this, as it is closer to the way it is in a full sized aircraft.
